End to U.S. Drone Strikes in Pakistan!

A 35-member American peace delegation is currently in Pakistan (October 3-10) protesting against and calling attention to the US drone strike policy in Pakistan, its impact on Pakistani civilians, and its impact on relations between the United States and Pakistan. The delegation intends to participate in a peace march against drone strikes in Waziristan on October 7.

We trust that you will communicate to the CIA and U.S. drone strike operators that there is a delegation of American peace activists that intends to travel in Waziristan. We also trust that you will communicate to U.S. drone strike operators that thousands of Pakistani civilians intend to participate in this peaceful rally and no harm should come their way.

Like the participants in the delegation, we are appalled that US drone strikes in Pakistan have killed and harmed so many civilians. The Bureau of Investigative Journalism has reported 474 to 884 civilian deaths caused by US drone strikes in Pakistan since 2004, including 176 children. Moreover, as a recent study from researchers at NYU and Stanford law schools notes, "US drone strike policies cause considerable and under-accounted for harm to the daily lives of ordinary civilians, beyond death and physical injury," as civilians live in a state of constant fear, since drones could strike at any time. Families are afraid to attend weddings or funerals, because US drone operators might strike them.

US drone strikes in Pakistan haven't made America safer. The number of "high-level" militants killed as a percentage of total casualties is just 2%. Evidence suggests that US strikes have facilitated recruitment to extremist groups, and motivated further violent attacks. They have also served to turn Pakistanis against the United States. Three quarters of Pakistanis now consider the U.S. an enemy.

We support the peace delegation's call for an immediate moratorium on the drone strikes, for U.S. policy in Pakistan be brought into compliance with U.S. and international law, and for the U.S. government apologize and compensate civilian victims and their families.
