President Obama: No to NATO! Out of Afghanistan!

Dear President Obama,

This week thousands of concerned Americans have come to your home town, Chicago, calling for an end to NATO and the shameful, wasteful, 11-year US/NATO war in Afghanistan. Since “getting Bin Laden” and defeating Al Qaeda were the stated reasons for the war in Afghanistan, you should be announcing a swift withdrawal of U.S. troops from the war-torn country.

Taxpayers in the city of Chicago, Illinois have paid $5.1 billion for Total Afghanistan War Spending since 2001 – for what?! In the worst recession since the 1930s, Chicagoans have experienced high rates of foreclosures and business failures. It is an outrage that the City of Chicago is planning to spend $55 million to host the NATO meeting this week while defunding schools, community mental health clinics, public libraries and public transportation.

I join millions of US citizens in opposing the continuation of the US/NATO war in Afghanistan.

I applaud the new president of France, Mr. Hollande, for pledging to withdraw, before the end of 2012, French forces from Afghanistan.

I urge you to promote an agenda putting people’s needs over war profiteers: end the Afghan war; stop illegal drone attacks; and refuse to be pushed toward a catastrophic war in Iran.

Changing the US military policy will win you votes and international support. Out of Afghanistan now!
